Under the leadership of Dr. Rulong Shen, Director of Cytopathology, and Dr. Paul Wakely, Director of the FNA section and the Cytopathology Fellowship Program, the Division of Cytopathology has continued its missions in service, education and research. The division continues to provide timely quality services to patients and clinicians at OSU and its outreach facilities. The newly launched twice weekly Cytopathology Peer Review Conference and monthly Cytology-Histology Peer Review Conference have greatly enhanced the diagnostic quality and improved the diagnostic skills of cytopathologists, residents, fellows and cytotechnologists. In addition to the already established Non-GYN and GYN glass slide assessment programs, our division also joined the ASCP GYN and Non-GYN teleconferences. These educational activities will continue to improve our screening and interpretive skills in non-gynecologic, gynecologic and FNA cytology. The Division of Cytopathology continued to provide FNA services to endoscopic ultrasound guided FNA (EUS), CT/ultrasound guided FNA, bronchoscopic pulmonary FNA and Endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial fine-needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) (ERUS). Our FNA service also extended to radio-oncology’s lymph node clinic. The use of our mobile FNA cart for the operating rooms and other sites has expanded. These services have gained support and praise from the clinicians and enhanced our fellowship training in deep organ cytology. Our EBUS-TBNA and ERUS services have not only helped the immediate interpretation and triage of the patient, but also helped with personalized treatment of the lung cancer patient via immunostains and EGFR, Kras and ALK molecular study of the cell block materials gained from these FNAs. Dr. Wakely has also trained all our cytotechnologists to assess specimen adequacy on FNAs. Clinical research and collaboration with basic research groups provides our residents and fellows ample avenues to pursue research. Members of the division have spoken at national and international meetings including USCAP, ASCP, American Society of Cytopathology, the OSU Pathology update course, the Thyroid Cancer Conference at OSU, and other international seminars.
