Duties and Opportunities
By
their very nature, pathologists are teachers. Residents are involved in
the teaching/training of pre-professional students, medical technology students,
medical students, junior pathology residents and other clinical house staff.
Residents participate on a routine basis in a number of interdisciplinary
conferences within the medical center and are also encouraged to
participate in national meetings by presenting their work in posters and
platforms. The Department subsidizes the registration and travel expenses
of all residents presenting their work at national meetings.
Participation
of residents in academic research activities is strongly encouraged and
supported. Opportunities for engaging in clinical or translational research
abound in the department. Strong mentoring is provided for those residents
interested in participating in research leading to publication in peer-review
journals. Several members of the department serve on Editorial Boards
of a large number of the major pathology journals in the country and have
ongoing research activities in which the residents are encouraged to
participate. The OSU Department of Pathology is consistently represented by
residents and faculty members at
the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology Annual Meeting (USCAP),
one of the
most prestigious anatomic pathology organization in the world.
Involvement
in organized medicine is becoming an increasingly important activity for
physicians in general and pathologists in particular. Resident membership in the
College of American Pathologists (CAP) is free to all residents in training.
In addition, residents are encouraged to attend, at no cost, the meetings of the
Central Ohio Society of Pathologists and the Ohio Society of Pathologists. All
residents also are subsidized by the department to attend one of the major
national meetings in pathology every year. In addition to an
annual 3-day Update Course in Pathology, which includes the
participation of guest faculty made up of various world recognized experts from
the leading institutions in the country, in addition to our own faculty members,
that is sponsored and organized by the department.
