Biosketch
Our laboratory studies the developmental biology and lymphomagenesis of human innate lymphoid cells (ILCs). ILCs comprise a diverse group of specialized lymphocytes that are involved in many aspects of physiology and pathophysiology including mucosal immunity, lymphoid neogenesis, cancer, allergy, and metabolism. ILCs are distinct from T and B lymphocytes in that ILCs do not rearrange their antigen-specific receptors. Our lab works with primary human tissue samples, such as blood, bone marrow, tonsils, spleen, and lymph nodes, to characterize novel ILC developmental intermediates that have been recently discovered. Common laboratory techniques employed include flow cytometry, cell sorting, in vitro culture, transplantation into immunodeficient mice, and molecular profiling & genetic manipulation. The ultimate goal of this work is to understand how ILCs develop normally and how such information can be used clinically to combat disease. Another major goal of this work is to understand how ILCs undergo malignant transformation.
