Biosketch
As a thoracic pathologist my interests in tumor biology are related to studies of protein expression. Tissue proteins represent a final functional element of gene expression, and as such are important targets for diagnosis, prognostication and treatment. In recent collaborative projects including interdisciplinary teams, we identified further evidence that gene methylation and tumor microenvironment play an important role in aggressiveness and metastasis. In a study of protein arginine methyltransferase-5 (PRMT5), a chromatin-modifying enzyme capable of methylating histone and non-histone proteins, we showed that PRMT5 plays an important role in lung tumorigenesis and its cellular localization correlates with tumor grade reflecting its functional dichotomy in cellular compartments. Targeted therapies have revolutionized lung cancer treatments in recent years; however, frequencies of targetable mutations in non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) vary among patient populations. Employing novel sequencing techniques we investigated molecular profile of a large cohort of patients of African American ancestry and showed that it may not be significantly different from European/white background for the presence of somatic driver mutations in NSCLC suggesting that a comprehensive genotyping approach could identify targetable alterations with potential impact on treatment in that population. My research interests in the field of interstitial lung diseases (ILD) are guided by the clinical needs of a large university center. Collaborative efforts include projects evaluating lung toxicity in the setting of solid organ transplantation as well as in evaluation of lung toxicity in genetically modified viral infection and mechanisms of acute lung injury.
