M3 AUTOPSY

Within the Internal Medicine/Neurology/Psychiatry block, all M3 students attend an Autopsy conference. This experience began in 2014 with the goals of highlighting how to order an autopsy, understanding cause and manner of death, and how to complete a death certificate. This program has evolved into a one-hour interactive conference aimed at introducing M3 students to the process of autopsy and providing hands-on experience. The conference consists of two parts. During the first 15 minutes, we will cover the benefits of autopsy, explain how autopsies are performed at the Ohio State University Regional Autopsy Center, discuss how to sign a death certificate, and outline the various methods for determining the manner of death. The remaining 45 minutes will involve medical students observing and examining tissues from actual autopsy cases performed at OSUWMC, under the guidance of autopsy faculty and residents. Students will also be encouraged to actively participate in the clinico-pathologic correlation after each case.

Objectives:

• Describe the importance of autopsy in patient care and the role of autopsy as the final diagnosis.

• State the differences between forensic and clinical autopsy.

• List the steps to request an autopsy and describe the role of the next of kin.

• Discuss the limitations of an autopsy.
