PATHOLOGY SOCIETY INTEREST GROUP

Welcome to The Ohio State University Pathology Student Interest Group (PSIG) Our mission is to expose medical students to the medical specialty of Pathology. We have several events per year which introduce the field, discuss CV building and extracurricular opportunities, and assist in residency applications and interviews.

Events

National Pathology Organizations and Conferences

Medical Student Recruitment - USCAP

  • The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) has an annual conference at the end of March that includes a fellowship fair, a wide variety of posters and presentations across all pathology subspecialties, and other professional development opportunities. Medical students can even present at USCAP.

Medical Students | College of American Pathologists

  • The College of American Pathologists (CAP) offers membership to medical students interested in pathology, which comes with free registration for the spring and fall CAP residents forum meetings, educational resources, chances to network with current pathology residents, resources for applying and matching to pathology residencies and more.

Student Memberships

  • The American Society for Clinical Pathology offers free memberships to all laboratory and medical school students. This comes with research and networking opportunities. The ASCP also hosts an annual meeting.

Ohio Society of Pathologists (OSP)

  • The Ohio Society of Pathologists (OSP) offers biannual meetings, which it encourages medical students to attend for networking and educational purposes.

OSU Pathology Update Course

  • Ohio State Pathology hosts its own annual conference, which it encourages medical students interested in pathology to attend for educational and networking purposes. OSU medical students and medical students who have rotated at OSU can register for this conference for free.

Association for Academic Pathology – Student Opportunities

  • Formerly the Association of Pathology Chairs (APC), the Association for Academic Pathology (AAPath) is a non-profit society which serves as the voice of academic pathology departments of Pathology in the U.S. and Canada. They offer several resources for medical students, including Pathology career resources, information about Physician-Scientist Training Programs, access to pathology residency open houses, and much more.

Medical Student Pathology Awards

OSU Pathology von Haam Award

  • This award is presented at the OSU Pathology annual graduation dinner event to an OSU medical student who has successfully completed medical school and matched into a Pathology residency. For information on how to qualify, please email Emily Marcellus or Erin McLaughlin

CAP Distinguished Medical Student Award

  • Given to a medical student in any year of training for outstanding achievement, aptitude or interest in pathology. The awardee is recommended for recognition by the pathology contact at a U.S. allopathic or osteopathic medical school.

ASCP Medical Student Award

  • This award honors medical students who have achieved academic excellence, demonstrated leadership ability, and shown a strong interest in the pathology profession. Ten medical students will be selected to receive this prestigious award. One student will be chosen to receive the Gold Award.

Goals:

1.    Allow medical students to learn more about Pathology through meetings, speakers, activities, and shadowing opportunities.

2.    Help the whole College of Medicine prepare for examinations by providing review guides and hosting study sessions specific to the pathology the students are learning.

3.    Foster a sense of community within the PSIG and provide a way for students to interact with one another through involvement in the group.

4.    Provide coaching sessions and mentorship to help navigate the pathology residency application process.
