Pathology Student Interest Group Goals:
- Allow medical students to learn about Pathology through meetings, speakers, activities, shadowing, review sessions, and research.
- Foster a sense of community between students that have an interest in pathology and provide a way for students to interact with one another through involvement in the group.
- Provide coaching sessions and mentorship to help navigate the pathology residency application process.
Events
National Pathology Organizations and Conferences
- The Ohio Society of Pathologists (OSP) offers fall and spring meetings and encourages medical students to attend for networking and educational purposes. The spring meeting includes a trainee round table which offers medical students a way to connect with successful attending pathologists. The spring meeting includes a trainee virtual poster competition for which medical students can submit a poster presented at meetings within the past year.
- The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP) has an annual conference at the end of March that offers free attendance for medical students. Medical students can present research abstracts as posters or platforms at this prestigious meeting. It includes a medical student genomics workshop, fellowship fair, a wide variety of posters and presentations across all pathology subspecialties, networking breakfasts for trainees, and other professional development opportunities.
- The College of American Pathologists (CAP) offers free membership to medical students interested in pathology. The CAP has numerous resources describing the field of pathology and matching into residency and offers medical student awards.
- Medical student members can attend the spring and fall CAP Residents Forum meetings for free which are excellent at providing insight into pathology residency and a career in pathology.
- The CAP has an annual fall meeting (held in conjunction with the fall Residents Forum) at which medical students can present research posters and a spring leadership summit for lobbying efforts in Washington DC. Both meetings are great opportunities for medical students.
- The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) offers free memberships medical school students and medical student awards.
- ASCP has an annual meeting at which medical students can present research posters.
- The Association for Academic Pathology (AAPath) serves as the voice of academic pathology departments of Pathology in the U.S. and Canada. This society maintains a list of elective rotations that accept outside medical student rotators and have resources such as recordings describing the field and match into pathology.
- The AAPath holds an annual meeting which medical students can attend with a Scholars Award to pay for attendance.
- The Intersociety Council for Pathology Information (ICPI) serves as an informational organization and offers awards and grants for medical students.
- The OSU Department of Pathology hosts its own annual conference in the fall, which encourages medical students interested in pathology to attend for educational and networking purposes. OSU medical students and medical students who have rotated at OSU can register for this conference for free.
