Dr. Michael Losos is the clinical director of the Biomarker Reference Laboratory (BRL), a part of clinical laboratory services at The Ohio State University Medical Center. Our laboratory’s goal is to develop new clinical tests through research in the fields of thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (TTP), atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), and other thrombotic microangiopathies (TMA). We work closely with Dr. Spero Cataland in the department of Hematology to support research in these areas. BRL is a CAP-certified laboratory that uses enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) testing for plasma samples. We currently offer the following clinical tests:

  • ADAMTS13 Activity
  • Anti-ADAMTS13 IgG Antibodies
  • SC5b-9 Complement (Terminal Activation Pathway)
  • Bb Complement (Alternative Activation Pathway)

BRL serves as the biobank for the United States Thrombotic Microangiopathy (USTMA) Consortium, which was co-founded by Dr. Cataland in 2014. Our lab stores and tests samples in collaboration with other sites around the country that are part of the USTMA Consortium. The goal of the consortium is to build a large referral base of patients with TMAs to facilitate research about predictive biomarkers.
