GASTROINTESTINAL

The Division of Gastrointestinal Pathology is led by Dr. Shaoli Sun, and includes Drs. Wendy L. Frankel (Chair of Pathology), Martha Yearsley, Wei Chen, Giovanni Lujan, Ashwini Esnakula, Jeff Kneile, Melinda Schumacher, Manisha Mishra, Wegahta Weldemichael and Jennifer Vazzano. Typical annual volumes exceed 12,000 gastrointestinal specimens from the main campus alone, and we continue to grow in step with the addition of the new James Cancer Hospital. Our division is an integral member of many multidisciplinary conferences, such as the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Multi-Modality Conference, Medical/Transplant Liver Conference, Gastroesophageal Tumor Board, Colorectal Cancer Tumor Board, Pancreas Tumor Board, and Gastrointestinal Clinical Fellows Conference. Our large volume of complex specimens provides a rich resource for research and teaching. We are actively involved in teaching of the medical students, residents, fellows, and outside visitors. Our gastrointestinal pathology faculty also has complimentary expertise in Gynecologic Pathology, Frozen Sections, Head & Neck Pathology, and Digital Pathology. We offer a one-year GI and Liver Pathology Fellowship program with a well-balanced blend of medical and neoplastic tubular GI, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic specimens and an option for the fellow to have sign-out privileges the second half of the year. Candidates interested in pediatric pathology gastrointestinal specimens have the potential to rotate at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, the largest children’s hospital in the country.
